Cayuco youth detained after holding centre incident

A Gambian youth who arrived in El Hierro earlier this week by boat has been arrested after attempting to strangle another African in the island's migrant holding centre.

El Hierro - 14.11.2008 - The 18-year-old landed in El Hierro on Monday with over 120 Africans, three of whom subsequently died due to hypothermia. Police believe he tried to kill his 22-year-old compatriot to avoid being identified as one of the crew of the large cayuco boat, which took 20 days to reach the Canaries from Guinea Conakry. The authorities are investigating claims by the migrants that over a dozen ocupamnts died on the journey and were thrown overboard.
